I remember it like it was yesterday...

Forty years ago, I was pregnant with my first baby. I read everything I could find on pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. I knew I was going to have a natural labor and a quick delivery.

I felt prepared and excited.

Instead, I developed severe preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, DIC, and a postpartum hemorrhage.

 I nearly died.

Why didn’t anybody tell me what could happen, what to look for, or how to get help?

I was uniformed, despite my attempt to prepare.

I was scared and traumatized.

I never, ever, wanted another woman to be as scared or unprepared as me.

My labor nurse was kind, caring, empathetic, and patiently explained everything to me in a way I could understand. I heard my calling and vowed to become a labor nurse, impacting the lives of other women as she impacted mine.

For over 33 years, I helped thousands of pregnant women understand what happens during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period.

But there is ONE huge mistake most women make - and it breaks my heart because it can cost you in SO MANY WAYS....

Your health…

Your life…

Your baby's health…

Your baby's life...

And that mistake is not bothering to educate themselves.

In the United States the maternal mortality rate has more than doubled from 1991 to 2014 (latest data available). Over 700 women a year die of complications related to pregnancy each year in the United States alone - and two-thirds of those deaths were preventable.

Fifty thousand women suffer from life-threatening complications of pregnancy. A report released in December found American women have the greatest risk of dying from pregnancy complications among 11 high income countries.

Simple prenatal education lessens the risk.

I am not trying to scare you – I am trying to prevent you from being scared.

Listen, I was there, and I wish there had been a person like me to turn to for information when I was critically ill and afraid.

I read everything I could get my hand on but NOTHING prepared me for what I endured. If I'd understood the warning signs, I might have avoided the severe illness that threaten my life and my baby's life.

So, I made it my life's work to help pregnant women discover what they need to know.

Every woman should be knowledgeable enough to understand fully and be empowered to participate in care decisions with confidence.

What You Don’t Expect When You’re Expecting – Straight Talk from a Labor & Delivery Nurse is an informative and enlightening program I designed to meet the needs of today’s pregnant women.
